Harold Emerson Haydon was born in Fort William, Ontario, Canada in 1909. Haydon came to Chicago with his family in 1917 and became a naturalized American citizen in 1941. He attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. Haydon was a long-time Professor of Art at the University of Chicago, teaching from 1944-1975. He became an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University from 1975-1982. In addition, Haydon served as the noted art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.

He was a close associate of other well known artists, charles camoin and albert marquet. He exhibited his works in paris’ salon des indépendents in 1905, in the salon de l’union artistique of toulouse in 1908-1910 and had an artistic presence in the salon de la société nationale des beaux-arts . His last exhibit was in the salon des tuileries in june of 1929. In december of that same year, his body was recovered having drowned in the seine river and is now in the famous père-lachaise cemetery. Because of the quality of his art, his works have been sold at auction and collected internationally. In la ciotat, france, near marseille, there is a street named after this artist: l’avenue guillaume dulac. Flowered fields, green grassy patches, a curved path and blue skies all figure in this engaging landscape with two figures. Printmaker, painter and illustrator, George Kenneth Hartwell was born in Fitchburg 1891-1949, Massachusetts. He studied at the Art Students’ League in New York City under Kenneth Hayes Miller, Edward Hopper, and George Bellows.
His work was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago (1923), the Society of Independent Artists (1923), Salons of America (1928 and 1934), Library of Congress (1944-46), the Laguna Beach Art Association (1945 and 1946) and the Carnegie Institute (1945).
For many years Hartwell worked as an illustrator for Century, Scribners and Theatre Arts. He was also a member of the United Scenic Artists.
His work is included in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Brooklyn Museum and more.
