Late 1800’s “The Daisy Chain” original painting, framed oil on canvas. Signed J. S. Eland lower right corner. Also signed on the back in pencil with name of piece and looks like a date of 1887 but it has not been confirmed. This is a classic painting depicting a young girl frolicking in the garden holding a string of daisies. The style of female portraiture is of the Art Nouveau time period in which this was created. This painting is large scale and is a rare piece for this artist, not many paintings have left art collectors collections to be offered to the public.
John Shenton Eland is a listed artist who studied at the Royal Academy and in Paris, and worked in London between 1895 and 1913. In 1903 he was headmaster at the Henry Blackburn Studio. Several of his works were acquired by the Brooklyn Museum.
