Erte was born Romain De Tirtoff in St. Petersburg, Russia, to a socially prominent family. At age 18 he moved to Paris and changed his name to Erte, the French pronunciation of his initials. In 1915 he began to work for Harper’s Bazaar, a very popular and widely read magazine, for which he designed the monthly cover for 22 years. During his very long and highly prolific career, he was best known for lavish costumes and set designs for the stage and screen. He defined and popularized the Art Deco movement and was one of the most prominent artists of the 1920s. His work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum and the Smithsonian, among many others.
